Edge Case Study: General Counsel Parental Leave Cover

Edge Case Study: General Counsel Parental Leave Cover

At Montgomery Edge, our services spread far and wide, connecting our clients with the best legal talent on a contract basis for a range of requirements, whether it be for a client secondment, a short to medium-term contract/temp role, or in this case, a parental leave replacement solution. Below is another example of Monty Edge’s premium service offering:

Scenario

Our client is a global renewable energy organisation that had their General Counsel taking parental leave and required someone to cover the period of leave. Monty Edge was approached to source a lawyer to take over the leadership of the legal function to support the business.

Montgomery Edge solution

Montgomery Edge sourced, and placed a senior lawyer, who had a wealth of in-house experience, and had previously run their own business. They had recently taken some time out and were now in a position to return to work.

This candidate had strong industry experience and saw this contract as an opportunity to get back into the market, and was able to immediately provide value to the business. They assisted on general transactions, led existing renewable projects, built and maintained strong relationships with stakeholders, and were able to offer a seamless transition of legal support to the business.

The lawyer worked in a hybrid manner (both at home and in the office) and was paid a fixed salary for the duration of the contract.

Outcome

Following the parental leave period working with our client, the candidate was offered an ongoing role given the positive impact they had on the business, as they became the central contact for a number of key projects, and the business grew to a point where they could justify the increased headcount.

Moral of the story?

If you are a lawyer looking to get back to work, and essentially ‘try before you buy’, a contract is a great alternative option.

Rather than locking yourself into a permanent position, a contract role allows you to gain valuable experience, and test the waters before committing. Both parties can benefit from this arrangement, and more often, than not, it can lead to a permanent role. However, if the role is not for you, you can leave at the end of the contract with no questions asked.

What have you got to lose?
