Regulators wait for no man!

Despite the prevailing uncertainty we have seen a steady rise in legal, regulatory and compliance roles within the corporate sector since June.

In particular we have seen strong demand for legal counsel and senior legal counsel between 4 to 8 years’ PAE across the insurance, financial services, construction and technology sectors. There is a lot of M&A activity in both the insurance and financial services industries with many entities aggressively looking to increase market share or divesting themselves of insurance and wealth management businesses. This combined with very active regulators – APRA and ASIC, in particular – has led to a surge in mid to senior regulatory/investigations’ focused roles.

In Sydney, on the back of increased investment and focus by the NSW Government into infrastructure projects, the major contractors and indeed various NSW Government entities remain active on the recruitment front. Surprisingly, real estate investment funds are buoyant and positive, and we are predicting further recruitment across this sector towards the back-end of the year.

All in all, the market for in-house lawyers is surprisingly buoyant as businesses accept the new ‘normal’ world and forge ahead with business objectives and strategy in place pre-COVID.
