Senior Associate / Special Counsel - Indirect Tax (6+ PAE) - Sydney

Our client is a leading Australian law firm with a highly regarded tax practice.

The Team

The Indirect Tax team acts for a broad client base, including multinational and listed companies, major developers, financial institutions and government bodies.

The practice covers GST advisory and disputes, transaction structuring, M&A, property and infrastructure, and cross-border matters. The team also advises on GST risk reviews, ATO audits, rulings, voluntary disclosures and objections.


The Role

An excellent opportunity exists for a Senior Associate or Special Counsel (6+ years' PAE) to join the firm's Indirect Tax practice in Sydney.

Working closely with senior practitioners, you will:
  • Independently run complex GST matters, including audits, investigations and objection processes.
  • Advise on the indirect tax implications of high-value M&A, property development and infrastructure transactions.
  • Assist clients with transaction design and restructuring, with a focus on property and financial services.
  • Assess indirect tax exposure and obligations arising from international and cross-border dealings.
  • Lead ATO engagements, including ruling applications, voluntary disclosures and responses to information requests.
  • Partner directly with senior stakeholders to identify risks and provide commercially practical solutions.
  • Support the development of junior lawyers and play an active role in client development and broader practice initiatives.
Requirements

The ideally candidate will have 6+ years' post-admission experience in taxation law with a strong focus on indirect tax and GST.

Additionally, you will have:
  • Experience managing complex tax matters with a high level of autonomy.
  • Experience in transaction structuring and cross-border tax matters.
  • Strong commercial judgement and the ability to translate complex tax issues into practical advice.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience supervising and developing junior lawyers.
  • An interest in business development and building long-term client relationships.
